As the new year begins, I wanted to take a moment to look back on the past twelve months and talk a bit about the future. 2017 was a rough year globally in a lot of ways, but it was a wonderful year for me personally. I saw the publication of my debut novel Sorcery for Beginners, travelled to book events around the country, and connected with friends old and new. I also started a new job as a book editor, worked on over a dozen titles since March, three of which were named best books of the year!
So what’s next?
First, I’m happy to say there are more developments happening with Sorcery for Beginners, but nothing I can officially announce yet. Hopefully we’ll be able to reveal details in the next few months.
In the meantime, I finished a new novel called Superkid!
The book will be publishing later in 2018. It’s a comedic adventure similar in tone to Sorcery, but this book focuses on superpowers instead of magic. I’ve been describing it to people as Superman meets Superfudge.
You can watch a short film I wrote and co-directed about the idea here:
SUPERKID SHORT FILM
Also, I started working on the sequel to Sorcery last month.
I’m only about a third of the way through the first draft, but I’m having a ton of fun with it. I think you’ll enjoy how the saga of Trish, Owen, Perry, and the others develops. Three words: Loch. Ness. Monster.
|Finally, I wanted to give a shout-out to some of my favorite media experiences of last year. I used to be obsessive about ranking movies and TV but now that I have kids, I’m lucky if I can seek out a few new experiences during the year. The following are my top choices:
- FAV LIVE PERFORMANCE: Hamilton at the Hollywood Pantages
- FAV FILM: Get Out
- FAV TV SHOW: Game of Thrones
- FAV TV EPISODE: Master of None, “Thanksgiving”
- FAV COMFORT WATCHING: The Great British Baking Show
- FAV OLDER THING I LOVED: A Face in the Crowd
- FAV UNPREDICTABLE ENTERTAINMENT: Twin Peaks: The Return
- FAV GRAPHIC NOVEL: March
- FAV BOOK: The Library at Mount Char
|ONE LAST FAVOR: if you’re sitting around bored this week, it would mean so much to us if you took a moment to review Sorcery for Beginners on Goodreads and Amazon. Every review helps!
Wishing you the best in 2018 —
